Yoga Schedule Change

There will be no yoga classes on Tuesdays or on

Saturday Afternoons until Tuesday, July 8th.

Our teacher Denise Lupardo-Lowe is taking a long-planned vacation.

Other classes - Joan's Saturday and Sunday classes at 10 AM and Roberta's

Thursday class at 9 AM - will continue as usual. Sorry for any inconvenience.

We're happy to announce the start of our ongoing classes for the 2008 season at the Ancram Opera House. We have a lineup of outstanding teachers leading some familiar as well as some new offerings.

 

All our instructors are schooled in skillful  use of the body, conveyed through their individual disciplines. We look forward to seeing you on our seasoned  maple floor--
exercising, drumming, writing, dancing or evolving in your yoga  practice.

Joan Arnold Yoga

 

Yoga has been a highlight of our Opera House program,  helping students learn the fundamentals of ideal movement as they apply to yoga.  Whether you are an expert or a  beginner, in this class you'll receive gentle hands-on guidance to help you fulfill each pose.  Joan incorporates the principles of Anusara Yoga and the  Alexander Technique, offering an unusual degree of individual attention in a  flowing, balanced class.  Come join our  enthusiastic yoga crew and learn to build strength, solve body problems and  find pleasure and ease in an ongoing practice. 

 

Joan Arnold,  Executive Director of the Ancram Opera House, is certified as a yoga instructor  and teacher of the Alexander Technique.   She brings to her classes a lifelong study of many movement forms as well as the insight and skill that come with a 30-year career in exercise and  dance.  She teaches yoga at Jennifer  Brilliant Yoga in Park Slope, Brooklyn.  In her private practice at NYC's Union Square, she helps her students  overcome back problems, recover from injury and surgery, improve posture and unravel  harmful movement habits. Also a mambo dancer, she aims to help people  recapture the inherent pleasure in movement.

 

 


Denise Lupardo-Lowe

Beginning or adept students are welcome in this  multi-level class.  All can benefit from  poses modified to allow you to clarify your form and work at your own  level.  If a chronic problem or injury  has kept you from yoga,  Denise's  personalized feedback can help you adjust your practice to your current  needs.  You will learn how to sense and  release restrictions of the breath and enhance the flow among postures.  Each class will end with a guided meditation.

 

Denise Lupardo-Lowe completed a 500-hour Ishta Yoga certification with Alan Finger in  2002.  A fitness instructor since 1986,  she was Fitness Director for Manhattan's "Body Design by Gilda."  A licensed massage therapist since 1996, she  currently teaches clinical massage therapy at the Swedish Institute College of  Health Sciences and is the Assistant Dean of their Exercise Science  program.  She maintains a private  practice with a specialty in recovery and injury management.

Roberta Roll  is a registered somatic movement therapist, certified Body-Mind Centering®  practitioner, and yoga teacher. She maintains  a private practice in Copake and teaches classes and workshops throughout the  tri-state area. She works with adults and children with a wide variety of  concerns, including musculoskeletal problems, injuries, respiratory and  circulatory conditions, multiple sclerosis, and the stress of everyday life.

The Pilates method emphasizes strengthening the body's  core with precise, mindful movements.  This class will help you tone, strengthen and stretch your body - safely  and enjoyably.  In a flowing series of  exercises, you will learn proper biomechanics in a relaxed, supportive  atmosphere. This open-level class provides modifications for beginners and  increased challenge for advanced students.  Some props are provided; you can also bring a Magic Circle or light hand weights.

 
Elaine Ewing is  a certified Pilates instructor and owner of Rhinebeck Pilates, located in the  heart of historic Rhinebeck.  She began practicing Pilates in 1998, and has  studied with many renowned teachers of the method.  Her teaching is also influenced by the  Alexander Technique, which she studies with Joan Arnold.  Elaine is excited to return to the Opera  House for her fourth summer!

AOH Dancing

Introduction to Latin Dancing


Saturdays · 5:30 - 6:30 pm

 

June 14th - July 5th

In this class you will learn the most popular Latin  dances as well as basic partnering skills.  Understanding the dance frame - the connection between you and your  partner - is crucial to being able to lead and follow.  We will use the rumba to introduce styling  and basic steps and go on to explore how they transform in cha cha, mambo and  merengue.  We'll also work toward learning basic Argentine Tango.  This  series aims to give you enough skill to find ease and enjoyment on the dance  floor.  You may come solo or with a  partner.  

 

David Dembo has been studying and teaching ballroom and Latin dance for over 10 years.  A lifelong student of the art of tango, he  continues to study International style ballroom and Latin.  He will be demonstrating and teaching with  his dance partner Joanne Stein, who has been studying and teaching  ballroom, Latin and Argentine tango for five years.

Hand Drum Workshop

Come learn African rhythms in Drum Circle style sessions. We'll begin with basic African  beats and work toward Latin rhythms. We'll  have a limited number of drums available, so bring your own drum or one to share. No prior experiencea required.  Steve's clear instruction and upbeat style is great for beginners and seasoned drummers alike.

 

Steve Collins has performed many professional gigs, including with Sewa Folee, a West African rhythm ensemble. He owned a percussion store in NYC, Loud Joy.  Steve has led many drum circles and studied with master teachers Yaya Diallo from Mali and Mamady Keita, from Guinea.

A Joy to Write

Like music, like drawing, writing is best done in a  state of a calm concentration and pleasure.  This workshop will show you how to  free your writing impulse in a safe, supportive group.  We'll learn techniques  for cultivating spontaneity, enhancing observation and writing with flow.  Ditch your dread, bring your pencil and  discover what can emerge.

 

Jim Paul, House Manager of the Ancram Opera House, is a poet and author of five books of  creative nonfiction and fiction, including Catapult and Elsewhere in the Land of Parrots.  He has  taught at the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference and at Williams College.  He is currently on the Creative Writing  faculty at CUNY's Hunter College.
